An implant is a titanium screw which is placed into the jaw bone during a small surgical procedure which is carried out using local anesthetic (the same as when you have a filling). Over a few weeks the implant integrates with the jaw bone and becomes secure, like a tooth root. Once integration has taken place a crown can be fitted over the implant screw.

If the tooth has been missing for a long time a small bone graft may be necessary, again this is a simple surgical procedure under local anesthetic, the added bone helps support the dental implant.

Success rates for dental implants are usually more than 95% and require good oral hygiene in order to maintain them in healthy condition. We usually recommend that patients with implants visit for an examination at least every year.
